Methodology
Carrier-Aware computes percentile ranks from publicly available FMCSA Safety Measurement System (SMS) data using the methodology published by FMCSA.
How it works
We use FMCSA's published SMS Methodology to rank carriers within their peer group (Safety Event Group) for each of the five public BASIC categories. The percentile indicates how a carrier compares to peers with similar inspection volume — higher means worse safety performance relative to the group.
Our computed percentiles are re-checked against FMCSA's published alert flags every month. Every score we serve includes the methodology version used to compute it.
Accuracy
Validated monthly
Re-checked monthly against FMCSA's published alert flags.
What we don't compute
- — Crash Indicator — requires non-public data. Marked as "unavailable."
- — HM Compliance — not published at carrier level. Marked as "unavailable."
When data is insufficient for a carrier, we mark the score as "suppressed — insufficient data" rather than computing an unreliable number.
